Salad Dressing Alternatives
Salads are generally the healthiest thing you eat - loaded with veggies and or fruits, sometimes a lean protein and some healthy-fat filled nuts – but the quickest way to ruin that pile of multicolored goodness is to pour a dressing on it.
Dressings tend to be calorie loaded , trans-fat laden , sodium packed sauces that only mask the flavors of the fruits, veggies, meats and nuts…kinda seems like a waste. So, what do we at TEG do when we decide it’s salad time? We grab dat Tabasco sauce son!
Why Tabasco? Well, to be frank, Tabasco sauce is just a peppery vinegar based sauce, which is something I usually make myself, but Tabasco sauce is an amazing alternative to that. The lowdown on the nutritional facts for 1 tsp of Tabasco is as follows:
1 calorie, 0 fat, 30mg Sodium, 0 Carbs and 0 Protein but don’t forget about capsaicin, as we’ve stated earlier it’s the thermogenic component that makes peppers hot and helps burn fat - click here for that article.
So, if you’re still asking “Why Tabasco?” I’ll simply tell you to take out your favorite salad dressing and compare it to my previous sentence.
If you can’t handle the heat and or flavor from Tabasco, here are some other alternatives that we also frequently enjoy:
1 tsp Yellow Mustard (we add dry red pepper flakes to it) – 3 Calories, 0 Fat, 57mg Sodium, 0 Carb, 0 Protein.
1Tbsp Spicy Brown Mustard (we add dry red pepper flakes to it) –5 Calories, 0 Fat, 50mg Sodium, 0 Carb, 0 Protein
1 tsp Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce – 0 Calories, 0 Fat, 100mg Sodium, 1 Carb, 0 Protein
1 Tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar (Mix with coconut oil for your best bet) – 3 Calories, 0 Fat, 1mg Sodium, 0 Carb, 0 Protein.
This is a short list of some Salad Dressing Alternatives…we have plenty more up our sleeves, but we will save those for later videos/posts.
1 key thing to remember when picking a salad dressing alternative (well it’s a few things): make sure Sodium is less than OR equal to 100mg, Total fat should be less than 10g of Saturated Fat and no Trans Fat, Carb should be 0 and Protein will be accepted if they’re giving it…except no Soy Proteins or Soy Protein Isolates please, thank you...here's why!
